With immersive experiences such as AR, VR and MR increasingly defying limitations and proving to be uniquely useful tools in the business marketplace, the linear user journey is being disrupted. To what degree should the user be led? How far & wide should they navigate themselves? This talk questions the roles of the creator/director/designer. Are we witnessing a transitioning from an autocratic dictator, leading the audience, to that of a democratic facilitator, setting the agenda, laying down basic rules, but leaving people to freely orientate and construct their own experience? We offer some tips and learnings from our recent experiential production work and look at how a pleasant and seamless UX isn’t always the answer.

Imogen is a multi award winning creative director with an extensive background in brand experiences, filmmaking,
music videos, production design, events, 4D projection mapping and CG content production. She specialises in
integrating multimedia with technology to deliver ground breaking projects that connect audiences with businesses

Her passion for culture and storytelling was born out of her social anthropology degree and today, as the new
creative director at Inition, she can be described as a Design Anthropologist, translating human values into tangible

She is also an Instructor Associate for UX courses at General Assembly, a member of the Interaction Design Foundation, and an advocate for ethics and AI.

Sam began his career in 2005, working as a UI designer for a range of different web design agencies and clients including Disney, Sony and Manchester United. When the iPhone arrived and revolutionised small screen interaction he founded Conjure, a London based agency specialising in mobile application design and development. Since then Conjures remit has grown, and now Sam leads the automotive team, designing vehicle dashboards for the cars and bikes of tomorrow.

Marco received his PhD in Computer Vision from Queen Mary, University of London in 2012. His industry experience includes 6 years at Ocado Technology in the robotics research group. He has experience in robotics, electronics, software engineering, industrial robots and vision for robotics. He is currently working on R&D projects at BlippAR for 3D geometry AR applications. Marco is instrumental in the launch of the latest technology from Blippar called Indoor Positioning System released in July 2018.

Stephen is a London-based Interaction Designer and Digital Creative with over 18 years experience in the industry.

His career has seen him work across a wide variety of projects and disciplines, creating both experiential and user centred websites, mobile and desktop applications and animations for many international clients like Google, Cisco, Tate, eBay, Sony, T-Mobile, Vodafone, the NHS, The Natural History Museum, Universal Music, Accenture and The Fat Duck.

He also works on the side as an illustrator and cartoonist, drawing for such clients as Microsoft, ITV and Thames Water. As well as producing a regular array of webcomics, he has also appeared in numerous anthologies and also had several series published in some of Britain’s longest running comics, The Beano and The Dandy.

Matthew and Stephen will take you through Swift’s three stage innovation process to reveal how they help companies explore experiences of the near future.

You will take part in a mini creative session with Matthew and his team to create experiences beyond screens powered by emerging technologies like AR, ML and computer vision from a users perspective. AI has long been discussed in the media as something that will radically change our lives. This is true in some instances, but as it stands, many consumers don’t notice the tangible impact AI has on their day to day experiences. How their favourite OTT platform generates the best content recommendations for them, for example.

This talk will focus on why consumers should care about AI, what it means for their privacy in the age of GDPR, what it translates to in reality in terms of user experiences and what we need to know and prepare for as designers. Atmosphere, feelings and emotions occurring during individual experience make the perfect excuse to share with others one’s individual and unique interpretation of the reality. Art in VR animation is mostly based on 3D image, therefore experimental form of work based on connecting traditional rotoscope animation with new techniques of extended reality makes the whole experience exceptional and special. Among other things drawing animation has its own characteristic charm, as well as distinct language which helps to break apart from traditional understanding of telling the story or sharing memories. The otherness corresponds with VR experience very well. The approach allows not only to change the perception of visual images proposed by the author but, first of all, it changes the form of communication between the artist and the user. It has revolutionized the way of sharing emotions and feelings and, above all, makes the experience worth trying.

Taking control of our health, or the health of a loved one, can be challenging. Much of the information we’re presented with is either too generic or not relevant to my context. Why can’t systems learn with me? Why can’t I get the information I need when and how I need it?
A challenge for the NHS and healthcare professionals alike is providing relevant and contextual information to patients at scale. In fact, this is a challenge for many industries.  Whilst the benefits of a human centred design approach to products and services is largely prescribed to, the effort required to deliver truly relevant, personalised and contextual information can be too high.
The creative use of technology, specifically AI, has opened new doors in creating sustainable services. AI presents a great opportunity to analyse massive quantities of behavioural data and provide inferences which can guide design and align evolving customer experience platforms.
In this workshop we will demonstrate, by following a patient centred design approach, how you can give people the information they need, when they need it and how they need it – creating a real connection and giving patients back control of their health. It is not a question of using AI to replace the human, but when in a patient’s journey to leverage AI to augment the human connection to make for the most effective patient outcome.

As Digital Solutions Director, I am leading the design and delivery process of technological solutions which impact Customer Experience Design. Working in close collaboration with Foolproof’s parent company Zensar, I am currently involved in shaping the Digital Customer Experience Platform – the objective of which is to build an end-to-end services model encompassing design, build, deployment and on-going platform evolution. Evolution is key as customer preferences are dynamic and the platform features need to be in sync with the same.

I bring 20 years of experience in the Technology sector and previous to Foolproof, I was with IBM (UK) for a decade, leading large transformation programmes encompassing consulting, solution design, sales leadership and business case design. I have worked across industry verticals and have experience in solutions spanning Applications Services, Cloud Infrastructure Solutions, Digital Platforms and Financial Engineering.

There has been a renaissance in conversational interfaces over the last few years. More and more businesses are using bots with interfaces that emulate human to human conversations to meet the needs of their customers, with some believing that conversations are going to eventually become the primary way of interacting with computers. It sounds simple: talking and chatting comes natural to us, so we should be moving towards communicating with machines in the same way, but is it?

Despite the hype, at the moment both voice and chat interactions have various usability issues that very often prevent them from providing a great user experience. In my talk, I will be drawing on my experience leading Aviva’s conversational UX projects to discuss what those usability issues are and how can designers work around them. I will also share my thoughts on how the conversational interface will evolve by incorporating elements from various types of interaction and modalities to meet user needs in a more effective way.

Why are we copy pasting the shitty-ness of IRL structures into digital systems?
In what ways is technology sexist, racist and oppressive?
How can we make visible the ways in which technology is perpetuating inequality?

I’ll be exploring the ways in which technology is mirroring the systems of oppression that frame our society. More specifically, by looking at Personal Intelligent Assistants e.g. Alexa, Siri I wish to expose the ways in which the use of gender in technology is not neutral and reinforces existing gender stereotypes.

The patterns of interaction we are creating in digital worlds are not only building on and perpetuating IRL dominant notions of violence and oppression, but are also reinforcing them and reshaping them back IRL.

How can we actively challenge the dominant oppressive discourses in technology?

Talk Title: Researching and Designing for Multi-Modal and Chatbot Interactions

Building conversational virtual assistants (or chatbots) is very different, not just technically, from building a multi-modal user interface for a smart device or robot, and yet there are also several important similarities when it comes to building the right thing, the right way. I’ll point out some of these similarities and differences (and why they might matter to you) as I discuss two experiences I helped create: one, a conversational enterprise virtual assistant for team members who handle bereavement and end-of-life account handling; and the second, a multi-modal robot designed to help folks remember to take their medications.

Talk Title: Augmented spaces, the future of the design studio

In the past 50 years computers have infiltrated the work environment to the point where there’s hardly a job left where they are not used. In the process, however, a rich continuum of understanding the world through movement, touch and spatial interactions has been flattened to pictures behind glass that are either manipulated through mice or touch interactions.

New technical developments such as augmented reality and spatial computing offer the opportunity to rethink how we can incorporate our body in knowledge work. To do this successfully we have to let go of design concepts that have been developed for a world of flat screens and start over with designing for digital spatial interactions.

Building on the work of Paul Dourish on embodied interaction design and David Kirsh on the use of space for cognitively demanding tasks I discuss a framework for thinking about and designing for augmented spaces.
